Socialize Your Brain

There are several habits you can practice consistently to support memory retention and keep your brain alert and active. These include, but aren’t limited to:
  • Getting adequate, consistent sleep (aiming for the same number of hours and similar bedtimes each day)
  • Limiting or avoiding alcohol and completely avoiding smoking
  • Challenging your brain regularly with new or mentally engaging activities
  • Eating a balanced, nutritious diet, staying properly hydrated, and exercising regularly
Many cognitive issues stem from poor nutrition, a lack of mental and physical stimulation, and unhealthy sleep habits. Regular social interaction also plays an important role in brain health. Socializing keeps the brain stimulated and can help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Group activities, in particular, engage the brain in ways that one-on-one conversations often do not.Resources: Harvard Health Publishing, Harvard Medical School, 3 Ways To Build Brain-Boosting Social Connections, Kelly Bilodeau, September 8, 2021 Harvard Health Last viewed: 20240724National Library of Medicine, When I’m 64, 5 Social Engagement and Cognition, National Academy of Sciences, National Library of Medicine Last viewed: 20240725Forbes, New Study Shows Social Connections Improve Your Brain Health, Bryan Robinson, Ph.D., Contributor, December 13, 2020 Forbes Last viewed: 20240728Harvard Health Publishing, Harvard Medical School, Get Back Your Social Life to Boost Thinking, Memory and Health, Heidi Godman, October 22, 2023 Harvard Health Last viewed: 20240728
