L-Arginine: Not Your Daily Supplement

L-Arginine is often marketed as a heart health booster, but it has both benefits and risks.

Benefits:
L-Arginine helps produce nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels and improves blood flow. It can benefit people with high blood pressure and boost exercise performance. It also aids muscle recovery and supports the immune system.

Risks and Limitations:
L-Arginine isn’t for everyone. People with kidney issues or a history of heart problems should avoid it. It can also lower blood pressure, which may be dangerous for those already on blood pressure meds. Pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and children should not use it.

L-Arginine can trigger herpes outbreaks, as the virus uses the amino acid to replicate. Those with herpes should choose L-Lysine instead.

Why It Should Be Short-Term:
Long-term use may disrupt insulin levels and blood sugar regulation. It can also cause hormonal imbalances.

The Bottom Line:
L-Arginine can benefit some people, but it’s not for everyone. Always check with a healthcare provider before taking it.
